Working With Millennials

We all come across lots of different things on various social media platforms and decide if we stop and look or if we just keep scrolling. I stopped scrolling and listened to this interview recently shared on my personal Facebook page and felt I just had to share it with you.

Simon Sinek is an author, speaker, consultant and writes on leadership and management. His published books include Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action and Together Is Better: A Little Book of Inspiration. Simon starts with the question of “Why?” I have learnt that our own personal why question drives us to do the things we do and live the way we do. Sitting back and asking ourselves what is our why is really important and something we don't often do enough.

In this interview, he discusses the four reasons why the millennials are like they are and the problems they face and why. Who are the millennial generation you may ask? They are those born between the early 1980’s and early 2000. As a parent, it hits you when he starts discussing the role we have played or are playing in raising our kids. We dote on them, tell them they are special and they each get participation awards for none other than showing up! How true! They are surrounded with instant gratification from us, from social media and society and with that instant gratification comes the release of the magical hormone we all love.... dopamine – the “feel good hormone!” What happens when that feeling doesn’t come instantly? Do the millennials really know what it is like to work hard at something over a period of time and then eventually have that feeling of achievement and fulfilment?

Please take the 15 minutes to sit and listen to this matter of fact, no punches pulled interview. If you have teenage kids, let them listen to it with you because I can guarantee they may have a light bulb moment! Click on the link below.
